GEMINI recommends that coastal
navigation be considered an acquired skill. After fitting
any compass to your GEMINI commander console, the compass
should be checked for inherent ‘Deviation’
and a correction card placed next to the compass. Ask
your GEMINI dealer about deviation and any appropriate
navigation courses. Skippers should not rely on GPS readings
alone. Although GPS systems can be very accurate, they
are also subject to user error. Always carry official
marine charts and observe traditional dead reckoning (DR)
by recording departure times and heading/course data,
in addition to GPS navigation data. Always study tidal
prediction charts to ensure safe passage in shallow waters.
Navigation on an open boat requires consideration as to
the layout of the console space, windscreen protection
to instruments and charts when underway. Check with GEMINI
for access to our knowledge base on Commander console
layout options for navigation.
